Freelance Work

  • About to launch a personal finance and lifestyle website as editor. Will also be creating content, managing community and undertaking some publicity work. Details upon request.
  • Recently wrote 'Which Uni? Find the Best University for You' - a new book for Trotman which was published on 15th October 2009.
  • Author of 'The Insider's Guide to Applying to University' for Trotman Publishing, on sale since August 2008.
  • I had five books aimed at teenagers published in 2005. These were all for Heinemann, and were reprinted as second editions in 2006.
  • My first book for Virgin, 'The University Survival Guide', was first published in April 2004, followed by an updated edition in a new format in 2007. 
  • Completed two Health and Drugs advice books for Hodder in 2003, and a third book for them about Body Image came out in May 2004. 
  • In the last few years I’ve supplied freelance feature articles that appeared in the London Evening Standard, the Guardian, the Independent, the Daily Telegraph, You Can (UCAS) magazine, Nova magazine, Which Way, Springboard, Etc and Etc 2 magazines, Fresh Direction and others.
  • I’ve also produced humour, news, advice and lifestyle articles for a number of websites such as channel4.com, need2know.co.uk and bbc.co.uk, written promotional material for record labels and other businesses, and started an entertainment website in 1996. 
  • Computer skills: experience includes HTML, HomeSite, Microsoft Office/Word, databases, spreadsheets, Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and other packages.

Coaching

  • Currently working with different clients to provide nutrition coaching. Unlike many similar practitioners I am properly qualified as a nutritionist, with an MSc in the subject. I work in the fields of nutrition for sports performance, breaking the diet cycle, general healthy eating and long term weight loss. My approach is no-nonsense, avoids faddy eating, and takes into account the client's personality, overall lifestyle and tastes.

Editor, Multinational health organisation (January 2005 to 2008)

  • Main editor at the central office of a worldwide health charity, which has branches in over 180 countries 
  • Workload included: editing and overseeing production of a wide range of publications and communications materials, writing speeches for high-level parliamentary meetings and global conferences, writing journal articles, planning and creating the annual report

Acting Editor, Fresh Direction Magazine (September 2003 to May 2004)

  • Fresh Direction for Student Life is the number 1 student magazine, distributed on and around campuses all over the UK, with a print run of 400,000 per issue
  • Duties included writing articles, creating advertising copy, chasing up freelancers, proofreading, supervising subs, use of Adobe InDesign, sourcing images, liaising with designers, adding material to the website, and so on
  • Reporting directly to the publisher

Deputy Editor, TheSite.org and YouthNet UK (Feb 2000-May 2003)           

  • In charge of the day-to-day running of a busy website for young people, reporting to editorial director
  • Responsible for: commissioning all freelance writers; writing newsletters; planning monthly special issues; organising columnists, volunteer writers and bulletin board moderators; editing copy; writing material for offline ventures such as magazines and leaflets; dealing with all advice enquiries
  • Writing feature articles, columns and advice on a wide range of subjects including careers, relationships, sex, drugs, health, housing and legal issues

Researcher/Reporter, Food Commission (Oct 1999-Feb 2000)            

I carried out the largest UK survey to date of foods that are packaged to appeal to children. The shocking results of this original research were published in The Food Magazine, and as a scientific report. On the day of its release, the study was featured on all main news bulletins on the BBC and Channel 4, and I was also interviewed on Radio 4 for the Today Programme. News report here.

Part-time Lecturer (1998–1999)      

Produced and presented human nutrition and metabolism lectures for second year undergraduates. Supervised students undertaking final year projects. Responsible for setting and appraisal of coursework and exams.

Clinical Research Assistant (1995–1997)               

Contributed to abstracts, papers, reviews, newsletters and funding proposals. Responsible for liaison with European clinics, database management, data analysis and presentation, and quality control.



MSc Human Nutrition and Metabolism, 1994–1995, Aberdeen University, Scotland. Included scientific research techniques, analysis of scientific publications, and presentation skills. Thesis: Red Meat, Dietary Fibre and Risk of Diverticular Disease.

MB ChB degree (Medicine and Surgery), 1989–1994, Sheffield University. Included biomedical sciences, pathology, sociology, psychology and psychiatry, medical statistics, and many specialties.
